In Reception we teach daily whole-class handwriting sessions using the structured Little Wandle handwriting programme. It is a systematic and research-informed early handwriting approach. The programme is designed to run alongside our phonic teaching and provides a strong foundation for teaching letter formation and developing writing fluency. Consequently our children are well prepared for writing as they transition into KS1. From Year 1, we follow the Nelson handwriting scheme. The children begin by looking at forming individual letters before moving on to joining letters together. As children move up through the school, they develop their confidence and fluency. In Key Stage 2, children can earn their pen licence by demonstrating clear, consistent presentation and joining in their writing.
